Phuket offers a wide range of activities, from adventurous to relaxing and even educational. As a former tin-mining town with a multicultural background, you can still find traces of the old trade hidden in renovated, charming streets, while sampling Phuket’s local dishes and tasting some internationally-recognised, locally made spirits. Out at sea and in the outdoors, there’s snorkelling, scuba diving and island hopping. The seascapes are also a great backdrop for a relaxing sunset cruise, which are abundant in Phuket.

Take a stroll through this historic quarter of Phuket, which dates back to the 16th century and is littered with cosy cafes, local eats, cool shops and bars housed in centuries-old Sino-European shophouses. Look for signs that mark buildings of historic significance. You don’t need a tour guide, and there’s plenty to explore, see and do both in the daytime and at night. You can easily spend a whole day here, starting from a local breakfast or brunch in one of the cafes, and work your way along the web-like alleys discovering gems on every corner.

Wandering through Phuket old town? You might chance upon Dibuk Road and hear the clamour of Tai Zun An, the last traditional blacksmith shop in its original location. Manned by Uncle Po, who is now in his 70s, Tai Zun An still produces metal tools by hand, using the same charcoal-fuelled forge that has been in use for over a century. Instead of tools for mine workers, the shop now offers handmade knives, gardening equipment and hardware tools that you can also buy as souvenirs.

Just 30-minutes drive from Phuket old town is the Distillery Phuket, home of Chalong Bay rum–Phuket’s first locally produced spirit to use 100 per cent sugarcane from Thailand. If you’re a spirit geek–or even just a local-culture vulture–you’ll enjoy a short but thorough distillery tour that walks you through how the delicious liquid is made. Cocktail lovers can book a workshop where they can learn how to make rum cocktails from an experienced mixologist. Lunch is on offer too, with cocktails made specifically to pair. Advance booking is recommended.
