Fresh interpretations of the Louis Vuitton Bed Trunk blend heritage with modern luxury travel design

Following Louis Vuitton’s reintroduction of the iconic Bed Trunk, or Malle Lit, in April, the luxury brand now presents two fresh interpretations of the classic piece, with creative input by Nicolas Ghesquière, artistic director of the brand’s women’s collections, and Pharrell Williams, the men’s creative director.

Invented by Louis Vuitton himself in 1868, the portable bed designed for globetrotting explorers quickly became a must-have for travellers, explorers, and military officers on manoeuvres and campaigns.

For the discerning traveller or design enthusiast, the reimagined Bed Trunk merges heritage craftsmanship with contemporary design, concealing a marvel of engineering beneath its classic exterior.

Featuring the iconic Monogram canvas, the sophisticated, folding bed frame, crafted from aluminium and beechwood, transforms swiftly into a stable bed base supporting a luxurious four-part mattress designed for maximum comfort.

The mattress sections, enhanced with a memory-foam topper, rest on woven cotton straps–a nod to the brand’s earliest trunks, which used similar straps to secure travellers’ belongings.

Drawing inspiration from his previous collections, Ghesquière’s rendition catapults the historic Bed Trunk into a futuristic realm, with an exterior that’s reminiscent of his Cruise 2023 collection, featuring engraved metal plates and modernised corner pieces that evoke a dystopian spatial aesthetic.

In contrast, the trunk’s interior reveals a romantic surprise with a floral-patterned mattress inspired by a jacket from the Spring/Summer 2018 collection–adding an element of surprise when the interior is revealed.

Williams’ interpretation, on the other hand, draws inspiration from a historic Bed Trunk in the Louis Vuitton archives, showcasing distressed striped patterns on the outside of the trunk–an homage to the legendary 1872 canvas, and red and white stripes on the inside.

Further elevating the contemporary design is the striking contrast between blond wood elements and black aluminium hardware, with a “LV Lovers” embroidery on the jacquard mattress and pillow.

For those eager to own a piece of this reimagined luxury, both Bed Trunks are now available to order, offering a rare opportunity to possess a fusion of Louis Vuitton’s timeless elegance and contemporary design genius.
