Bollywood stars know how to slay on red carpets. Indian designers Arpita Mehta, Rohit Gandhi and Rahul Khanna take Tatler inside celebs’ wardrobes and share how each look is meticulously created
Be it Aishwarya Rai looking like a vision in red at the ongoing Paris Fashion Week or Alia Bhatt’s ethereal pastel sari appearance at this year’s Met Gala, Bollywood stars know how to turn up the style quotient on every red carpet and fashion outing. Also, nobody’s likely to forget the half-year-long Ambani wedding celebrations and the Bollywood brigade’s veritable fashion parade that came with it.
But behind these stunning looks that appear on “best dressed” lists and go viral on social media, there’s a huge team of designers, stylists, make-up artists and other creatives who work tirelessly to put everything together.
Tatler talks to two of Bollywood stars’ go-to designer labels, Arpita Mehta and Rohit Gandhi & Rahul Khanna to understand the creative process and how an outfit finally ends up being chosen for a celebrity’s closet.

Moodboard to wardrobe
“When designing for such prominent personalities, you’re not only focusing on the brand but also tailoring the design to reflect their unique persona. It pushes you to think beyond the ordinary because you’re creating for someone extraordinary,” says Mehta. She knows what she’s talking about, having worked with the likes of Deepika Padukone, Katrina Kaif, Sonam Kapoor and other industry powerhouses.
Dressing Bollywood stars is a collaborative, two-way process. According to Mehta, “It begins with understanding the event they’re attending, followed by receiving a brief from their stylist. Based on this, we develop a concept, create sketches and prepare a mood board. Once the designs are ready, we seek approval from the celebrity to determine which outfit best suits the occasion.”
