How architecture firms are shaping the Greater Bay Area’s cultural and social development
Long gone are the days when South China was seen as a centre for agriculture and manufacturing.
In 2019, Beijing announced its ambitious scheme of consolidating nine cities—Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Zhuhai, Foshan, Huizhou, Dongguan, Zhongshan, Jiangmen and Zhaoqing—in the region and the two special administrative regions of Hong Kong and Macau into a collective megalopolis known as the Greater Bay Area. The move has brought in new business prospects and rapid development which have completely changed the lifestyle and economic models of the region—and buildings need to keep up with those developments.

HOMES
Frank Sinatra’s old luxury home—where Miley Cyrus shot the ‘Flowers’ music video—can be yours
The house that Frank Sinatra once called home—and dubbed “America’s most filmed private location”—is now on the market. The 8,161 sq ft, seven-bedroom, nine-bathroom luxury estate, known as Byrdview or Farralone and Fox House, sits on 13 acres of private land in the Los Angeles suburb of Chatsworth.
The home, which is built in the mid-century-modern style, has seen plenty of famous faces pass through its doors. As well as Sinatra, who reportedly lived there in the late 1950s and early 1960s, it has also served as the set for a variety of films and TV shows were filmed, including 2006’s Dreamgirls, starring Beyoncé; and the hit series Mad Men and Californication, among others. Parts of the music video for Miley Cyrus’s 2023 hit Flowers were filmed there.

Private members’ club 1880 boss Jean Low on how the establishment is anything but strict and stuffy
What do you think when you think of a private members’ club? For many, it evokes a sense of impermeable, intimidating exclusivity—one in which men in tailcoats and hushed voices act as gatekeepers.
Jean Low is determined to break that image. The CEO of private members’ club 1880, which opened in Singapore in 2017 and is launching in Hong Kong in autumn and Bali by the end of the year, wants the establishment to be the exact opposite of “traditional stuffy clubs [which are] full of rules and built to keep people out”. Instead, she wants it to be a space where conversations and connections can thrive over good food and drinks in a truly congenial space.
