‘Lumpia’ isn’t just a dish, it’s a Filipino emblem of community and heritage—and Abi Marquez is bringing this iconic food to social media feeds worldwide

Each bite of a golden, crispy lumpia holds a cherished place in Filipino hearts and dining tables alike. Whether as a mainstay at family gatherings or a symbol of festive celebrations, this iconic food—similar to a spring roll—encapsulates the essence of Filipino cuisine. It is a tradition, a signature flavour and a communal joy.

Elevating this humble dish to new heights is Abi Marquez, affectionately dubbed TikTok’s “Lumpia Queen”.

Hailing from Laguna, Marquez sparked a global fascination with lumpia from her home kitchen. In her videos, she invites the audience to savour the intricacies of Filipino food. Her infectious enthusiasm for local cuisine earned her a spot on the Tatler Gen.T Leaders of Tomorrow 2024, our annual list recognising the most promising young leaders creating trends within Asia and beyond.

But Marquez does more than wrap food with a lumpia wrapper, she has become a cultural ambassador and innovator using her platform to showcase the rich tapestry of Filipino cuisine and traditions.

Magna cum laude

Marquez’s culinary prowess is grounded in her academic background. She holds a degree in Hotel, Restaurant and Institution Management from the University of the Philippines, graduating magna cum laude in 2022. Her education honed her cooking skills and gave her insights into food safety, presentation and efficiency.

A talented singer

Beyond the kitchen, Marquez finds solace in music. An avid singer, she often spends time belting out tunes and enjoys playing the piano and guitar. Before gaining fame on TikTok, Marquez shared her musical talents through song covers on YouTube and Instagram. You may hear her covers as background tracks in several of her cooking videos. 

Multi-award winner

Marquez started making food videos on TikTok in 2022 when she was juggling multiple school requirements for her final year in college. Creating TikTok videos was her creative outlet.

She has since received global recognition including the Webby People’s Voice award in Social (Food & Drink) and the prestigious James Beard 2024 Media Awards, earning a nod in the social media account category.

One of Marquez’s early uploads, featuring the unconventional idea of frying marshmallows in lumpia wrappers, propelled her to prominence in the local TikTok food scene. Within three days of its release, the video garnered over a million views and dominated TikTok feeds.

But what earned her the title “Lumpia Queen” was her recipe for recreating a Filipino favourite, peach mango pie, with lumpia wrappers. The video has received over 3 million likes and hundreds of thousands of saves.

Global collaborations

Marquez has embarked on a global culinary journey, collaborating with renowned personalities from various corners of the world. She has put Filipino food on the social media feeds of Italian-American content creator itsQCP, American celebrity chef Rush, and Malaysian comedian Uncle Roger.

She also made Filipino-American singer Saweetie a fish sinigang and was spotted eating Jollibee spaghetti in front of Benny Blanco, who received backlash for his review of the Filipino sweet-style dish.
